Background

A Ghanaian Finance App, Overdue for Clarity

StashUp is a Ghanaian personal finance app for linking accounts, budgeting, splitting bills, and auto-saving. Years of feature-first growth had left it cluttered and hard to navigate, and I was brought on as sole designer to completely redesign the experience and shape a new generation of features.

The Problem / Objective

Capable, But Buried

The app could do a lot, but asked too much of the user to get there. Key features were buried behind unnecessary steps, navigation had no clear mental model, and the interface looked dated, more like an old banking app than a modern finance tool people could trust.

The Right Features in the Wrong Hierarchy

I audited every screen and flow, tracing the real routes to core tasks. The problem wasn’t capability, it was structure: the app had the right features in the wrong hierarchy, which reframed the work as reorganising rather than adding.

The Design Process

Rebuilding Around the Tasks People Actually Perform

Working from the audit, I rebuilt the information architecture in Figma around the tasks people actually perform, pulling buried features to the surface and applying a modern, trustworthy visual system throughout. Alongside the redesign, I designed four new features: StashUp Rent (financing Ghana’s 1–2 year rent advances, repaid in instalments), Financial Wellness, Virtual Cards, and a refined Split & Pay flow.

Outcomes & Impact

Faster to Reach, Broader in Adoption

Since rollout, StashUp has grown its user base across both iOS and Android, and the tasks people open the app to do are meaningfully faster to reach than they were before the redesign. Features that had been buried several steps deep now sit at the surface, and the newer ones, StashUp Rent among them, launched into a structure that could actually hold them.
